Research about the effect of leading, line length, etc. on legibility is cited in the book "Words into Type", 3rd. ed., Prentice Hall. Sir Cyril Burt is cited in particular: A Psychological Study of Typography, Cambridge University Press, London, 1959. Also mentioned is Miles Tinker, Legibility of Print, Iowa State University Press, 1963, which is supposed to include an annotated bibliography. I would also suggest searching the psychology bibliography that many libraries have on CD ROM these days. Henning Schulzrinne, University of Massachusetts, Amherst
