[comp.text.tex] Naive TeX admin wants your flames

green@ponder.csci.unt.edu (Michael S. Green - asst UNT CSCI sysadm) (11/20/90)

I'm sure this question has been asked several hundred times, but.....

I have no real TeX experience but I suddenly find myself having to install
and maintain it, from scratch. My initial foray into the documentation
has left me confused and somewhat numb. Does a document exist that explains,
from a system administrators perspective, the different pieces of TeX, the
options available and how they work together.

I'm interested in 2.95 vs 3.0, texview (previewers in general), web2c,
printer drivers (postscript, HP-GL, ect...), font libraries, macro packages,
TeX vs. LaTeX, what does it take to install it on ??? (Sequent, IBM RS/6000,
NeXT, System V.4, ect...), and anything else that has to do with TeX (neat
utilities, FTP sites, books, what is Common TeX ect..).

I've got the install docs from Labrea and the TeX Book but I need more. If
people are willing to send me the info I'm willing to digest it, recompile
it, and put together an overview of TeX and its' associated goodies. My
theory is that if I put this together as I work through it the result will
be a coherent compilation along the lines of "This is TeX -- A. B. C."

We use a dvi driver that drives a LaserJet II, one of the HP PCL
(Hewlett-packard Printer Control Language) printers. If you find a
dvi driver for a HP-GL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language, the scheme
used for plotters) device, I would be surprised and pleased to learn
of it.
