[comp.text.tex] is there a Postscript to dvi?

hughes@azroth.csee.usf.EDU (Ken Hughes) (11/21/90)

We've started using dvimac to allow our users to preview dvi files on our
Apple ImageWWriters, but there are already complaints about not being able
to view files included from figprep and psfig. Does anything exist which
will convert PostScript to dvi? (I realize that a full PostScript emulator
is a major task, but it would seems that the usefulness of this would have
led someone somewhere to hack at it using existing code).

Hey, just askin'.

As far as I know (and mostly, yes, I do know) a tool such as you request
does not exist.

But, for us poor people, there is an el cheapo solution. Get
GhostScript. This is the GNU implementation of Postscript. You can find
it on a lot of FTP addresses in the GNU directory. E.g. on
prep.ai.mit.edu, which is home-of-gnu.

The program works good, *BUT* there is a big *BUT*! If you use
GhostScript because you're poor, chances are good, you cannot afford to
buy expensive fonts. So you'll have to use the el cheapo/for free fonts
that come with the package. This makes the output much less than
attractive, but sometimes when you have to choose between ugly prints and
no print at all, sometimes, you might want to decide in favour of
printing. And this is where GhostScript comes in handy.
