[comp.text.tex] Questions about TeX on DOS

Sorry for the confusion caused by my last article about PCTeX, it should
be TeX on DOS. I repost the following again.

I downloaded DosTeX 2.9 and DVIVGA from WUSTL archiver a couple of days ago
and installed on my PC 386SX without problem. Here are the problems I had
with the package:

1. The LaTeX command is very slow, even my PC runs at 20MHz and has 2MB memory.
   I guess the instruction in the .EXE files are of 8086. Is any version
   specially for 386 PCs, both commericial or PD? Is the lastest version,
   i.e. 3.0 available?

2. The LaTeX occasionally failed when handling some tex files which can be
   correctly processed on SUN workstations. The most common error messages
   I had was "Sorry, no enough memory (max 300001)". But the others were
   complaining something are not properly defined. Could you tell me what
   is the reason behind the failure?

3. I tried the SBTeX 3.0 and it supposed faster than PCTeX. But I could not
   find the LaTeX command and I don't know how to build it from INITEX. Also
   it didn't include any fonts with it. Please tell me how to setup a working
   version of SBTeX on PC.

4. The DVIVGA command is for EGA/VGA only. I don't have MS WIN version and
   I don't want to use WIN. Is there is a better version of DVIVGA which
   could operate for SuperVGA, TVGA, etc., as they have high resolution
   than the normal VGA?

Thanks all of you replied. I have download emTeX 3.0 from UMICH and
installed on my 386SX. Here is the problem I have:

1. The package is on six 1.2MB disks. After unzip, it occupied more than
   14MB disks. My intention of using emtex is to setup a typesetting system
   on my PC so I could write papers while in home. I only need a basic
   working system. I decided to delete some components I thought not useful
   to me.  The things I removed are

	BLATEX
	BMF
	BTEX
	GBLATEX
	GBTEX
	GLATEX
	GTEX
	LATEXDOC
	LKURZ
	MFWARE
	MISC_MF
	PKEDIT
	TEXWARE
	WEB

   Is anything more could be removed from harddisk? Or I have deleted something
   which is essential to a basic working system?

2. I tried the latex command and I am very satisfied with its speed. However
   I cannot preview the DVI file it generated with the dviscr.exe command,
   which complained that some font files, like lj_????, could not be found.
   I guess that I did not installed them. I could not find them either on
   the six disks I downloaded. I am curious why dviscr should use the HP
   LaserJet fonts and how I could get it. There are many dvi driver in the
   emtex directory. I don't need all of them. A VGA preview would be enough
   for me. I want to remove some of them. I hope I won't have trouble in the
   future?
