[comp.text.tex] Thesis spacing

Recently, I talked to our Graduate Registrar regarding thesis formats,
in particular the requirement of double spacing (which he defined as
twice capheight, by the way). He claimed that University Microfilms
if not requires, then strongly suggests double spacing, but did not
have any written documents to that effect. Also, he said, that they
would generally follow the lead of the "big name" schools in that regard.
I told him about some British universities that have apparently finally
seen the light, but he was only willing to consider US (possible Canadian,
assuming they also deal with UMI) schools as precedents.
Can anybody cite actual UMI rules and/or effective policy (i.e., that
they have accepted a bookspaced manuscript without complaint)?
Has anybody convinced a university to follow standard book typesetting
practice? Your help is appreciated.
