I recently posted asking where I could find CM fonts at 1270 DPI, and received some kind replies, for which I am most grateful. Of course, what I really need is Metafont, so that I wouldn't have to bother others with requests like this. The version of Metafont that is installed on the Vax here at CSU seems not to work properly. Whenever I invoke it, and regardless of what I put in the command line, it says "Sorry, I can't find the base" and crashes. This is so even though plain.base and the cm base are where they should be. Nobody here seems to know what to do about this. I have not been able to find a public domain copy of Metafont for the PC (I use a 386 clone). I do find mf.web at various ftp sites, but am not sure what to do with this. Obviously, my knowledge about these things is quite limited. Can someone help me to get Metafont running on either the Vax or the PC, using language I can understand? I'll be most grateful for email, as I don't often read this group. Thanks.
