Dear TeX Users: The problem is solved. It's the new Ultrix Version 4.0 C Compiler. I used the C Compiler Version 2.0 to compile the TeX Version 3.0 source code. I have since found out that this compiler has Optimizing problems. DEC has released a ``fix.'' They have a new C Compiler Version 2.1. If you buy FORTRAN, you get both. Another way to fix the problem is to compile TeX Version 3.0 again but without the -O option. This worked!!! I have not tried re-compiling with the new C Compiler (Version 2.1; This worked see one of the notes shown below). Please read over some of the replies that I received from all over the world. Thanks to all who helped out. I hope this note helps others. Thanks for all of your input. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - M. R. Are you running Ultrix 4.0.1 (4.0 w/mandatory patch?) If you are, you're probably using the 2.0 compiler. Do an ls -l on /usr/bin/cc. cc2.0 has some optimizer problems -- I had the same problem with math stuff. I'm pretty sure you can get a working version if you compile everything with -O0. On the other hand, if you use cc2.1, everythings OK, even with -O. We got cc2.1 with f77 ... I don't know how to get it otherwise. steven parkes --------------------------------------- University of Illinois Coordinated Science Laboratory steven@pacific.csl.uiuc.edu ------------------------- ====================================================================================== From p554mve@c1a.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de Sun Nov 25 19:52:03 1990 Received: from mcsun.EU.net by osupyr.mps.ohio-state.edu (5.51/1.890605) id AA26198; Sun, 25 Nov 90 19:51:56 EST Received: by mcsun.EU.net with SMTP; Mon, 26 Nov 90 01:50:31 +0100 Received: from mpifrrouter-x25a.extern.Uni-Dortmund.DE by unido.informatik.uni-dortmund.de with SMTP via EUnet (UNIDO-2.0.2.c) via EUnet for [192.16.202.1] id AB21968; Mon, 26 Nov 90 01:46:19 +0100 Received: from mpirbn.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de by mpifrrouter.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de (4.1/SMI-4.0) id AA01609; Mon, 26 Nov 90 01:26:37 +0100 Received: by mpirbn.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de (5.51/7.0) id AA16569; Mon, 26 Nov 90 01:27:20 MEZ Date: Mon, 26 Nov 90 01:27:20 MEZ From: p554mve@c1a.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de (Michael van Elst) Message-Id: <9011260027.AA16569@mpirbn.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de> To: mrs@osupyr.mps.ohio-state.edu Subject: Re: TeX Version 3.0 on DecStation 5000/200's Newsgroups: comp.text.tex In-Reply-To: <1536@osupyr.mps.ohio-state.edu> Organization: Max-Planck-Institut fuer Radioastronomie, Bonn Status: RO Hello, In article <1536@osupyr.mps.ohio-state.edu> you write: > I have been trying to install TeX Version 3.0 on a DecStation 5000/200 >but I am having alot of problems. I've TeX3.0 running on a DecStation 5000/200, Ultrix4.0. I didn't have problems with it except for the cc2.0 optimizer. Since we have cc2.1 too I've recompiled it with it (and optimizer on) and it now passes the triptest.
