[comp.text.tex] TeX Version 3.0 on Ultrix Version 4.0 DecStations

mrs@osupyr.mps.ohio-state.edu (Michael Robert Savage) (11/26/90)

Dear TeX Users:

The problem is solved. It's the new Ultrix Version 4.0 C Compiler. I
used the C Compiler Version 2.0 to compile the TeX Version 3.0 source
code. I have since found out that this compiler has Optimizing problems.
DEC has released a ``fix.'' They have a new C Compiler Version 2.1. If
you buy FORTRAN, you get both. Another way to fix the problem is to compile
TeX Version 3.0 again but without the -O option. This worked!!! I have not
tried re-compiling with the new C Compiler (Version 2.1; This worked see one
of the notes shown below). Please read over some of the replies that I received
from all over the world. Thanks to all who helped out. I hope this note helps
others. Thanks for all of your input.

Did your version of TeX with the underfull box errors pass the trip
test? Are you using web2c? What version?

[ ... ] ( Ultrix Version 3.2) Does anyone have any ideas about what the
   problem is?

Turn off the optimizer on the compiler. It should cure the problems.

I had a similar problem installing the older version of TeX on
DeCStation 5000/200's, and it turned out to be caused by the optimizer.
Try compiling without -O. I didn't bother to narrow down the problem
to a specific source module (or further, to specific code). If you
do, please let me know about it!

Good luck,
Steve

I have a TeX running (compiled with cc, not gnu c), but only after
turning off the optimizer (-O) flag.

Are you running Ultrix 4.0.1 (4.0 w/mandatory patch?) If you are, you're
probably using the 2.0 compiler. Do an ls -l on /usr/bin/cc. cc2.0 has
some optimizer problems -- I had the same problem with math stuff. I'm pretty
sure you can get a working version if you compile everything with -O0. On the
other hand, if you use cc2.1, everythings OK, even with -O. We got cc2.1
with f77 ... I don't know how to get it otherwise.

Maybe you can send the TeX input in question. I've TeX3.0 running on
a DecStation 5000/200, Ultrix4.0. I didn't have problems with it except
for the cc2.0 optimizer. Since we have cc2.1 too I've recompiled it
with it (and optimizer on) and it now passes the triptest.

Sorry, I can't answer your question. In fact, I've got the same
problem with a Sony box with a MIPS processor. If you have some new
info (didn't see any in comp.text.tex) could you forward them to me.
Thanks in advance...

Hum... I've just finished compiling and testing TeX3.0 on my
MIPS/Sony box. Reading through comp.text.tex, I've changed my site.h
to read :

#define schar signed char
	      ^^^^^^
and disabled all optimisations in the makefile, and it seems to have
done the trick. I'm not sure wich compiler I'm using, the MIPS one or
one from Sony, but it seems to works fine now. Don't know if it'll
help...
