[comp.text.tex] MetaFONT italic PUNK fonts

gram@uctcs.uucp (Graham Wheeler) (11/27/90)

As my first experiment with MetaFONT, I recently typed in the PUNK MetaFONT
description given by Knuth in the August 1988 issue of TUGBoat. Everything
went OK except for one line in PUNK.MF, in the definition of `pd', where
Knuth has:

def pd ...
	dot_pen_path shifted zt_ withpen penspeck enddef;

It's the zt_ (z subscript t_) that MF threw out. Eventually I just used
`z' which compiled OK.

The upshot is that the italic characters don't work properly. The dots
created with pd are in the same location as for normal, while the lines are
correctly slanted. The combined effect is rather strange - italic characters
with dots scattered `arbitrarily' around.

Has anyone entered this font and got it working?

In my copy of punk.mf, the line in question is:

  dot_pen_path shifted z.t_ withpen penspeck enddef; % {\bf drawdot}
