I received the TeX 3.0 (9/28/90) distribution from Maria Code and installed it on our 3090 running VM/XA 2.1. I rebuilt and compiled TeX and IniTeX against our Release 2 VS/PASCAL compiler. TeX works just fine, but I am having problems with LaTeX. When I try to running LaTeX this is what I get: latex local Please ignore ** prompt, TeX is preloading LaTeX and processing local tex * This is TeX, Version 3.0/CMS 1.2 (no format preloaded) ** Please type the name of your input file. ** (Fatal format file error; I'm stymied) Ready; T=0.02/0.04 09:41:55 I have rebuilt lplain.fmt using the usual sequence: initex **lplain [messages from lplain as it loads ...] *\dump [more messages] but this hasn't helped. The problem does not seem to be sensitive to whether or not your virtual machine is running in XA or 370 mode. I looked through the Web sources for TeX, and the "Fatal format file error..." message is issued from about ten places for a variety of error conditions. If any of you have seen this problem and have a solution, I would appreciate some assistance. Finally, I have sent two messages to the VM/CMS coordinator, Joachim Lammarsch at X92@DHDURZ1.Bitnet but have received no response. [Joachim, if you see this article, would you respond (privately)? I think we may have mail problems ...] Bill Bormann expert.cc.purdue.edu!ad2 (USENET) | Math Sciences Building bormann@purccvm (BITNET) | Purdue University Computing Center ad2@expert.cc.purdue.edu (Internet) | West Lafayette, IN 47907
