[comp.text.tex] help: writing bibtex styles

jdm5548@diamond.tamu.edu (James Darrell McCauley) (12/11/90)

Howdy,
I've just put all of my favorite references in bibtex format and am
contemplating writing a bibtex-style file to match _TRANSACTIONS OF
THE ASAE_ (American Society of Agricultural Engineers). Before I do,
could some wise soul suggest an existing style that I can start hacking
on? Here's a few sample references:
 *Serial:
  Tevis, J.\ W.\ and A.\ D.\ Whittaker. 1990. The role of kriging
in prescription farming. {\em Transactions of the ASAE} 50(3):374--376.
 *Book:
Schwarts, R.\ J\@. 1955. {\em The Complete Dictionary of Abbrevi-
  ations.} New York: T.\ Y.\ Crowell Co.
 *Proceedings:
  Tevis, J.\ W., S.\ W.\ Searcy, and J.\ D.\ McCauley. 1991. Simulating
spatially--variable agronomic inputs. In {\em Proc. 5th annual
  conference of GIS hackers,\/} ed.\ H.\ D.\ Londen and W.\ Wilkes,
219--232. Washington, DC: Am. Soc.\ Soil Sci.\ Folk.
I've just started learning bibtex and have noticed that the most recently
outdated version (0.98?) may not be compatible with the current version
(0.99?). Is this the case, or am I confused? I've yet to figure out
which version I have. The man page is dated "Nov 7 1989" and contains
this:
  HISTORY
Written by Oren Patashnik under the direction of Leslie Lam-
port. Ported to UNIX by Howard Trickey, June 1984.

Because this will not likely be of general interest to comp.text.tex,
PLEASE respond via email.

Thanks,
