Hello,
First let me preface this query with a "I am novice to TeX". I
just loaded all of ./text-processing/TeX from the UUNet archive tape I
received. I then loaded ./postscript/dvips from the same tape. I am
trying to run a portableC.{tex,sty,bib} that appeared on USENET a while
back. I can get the TeX portion to generate a seemingly useful dvi file.
However when I try running dvips I get the following output
dvips portableC.dvi

It looks to me like it worked but the .ps file that gets generated
is only 8K long. I mailed the stuff to a friend who can run TeX but isn't
familiar with installation. He sent me back a postscript file that was
210K and printed thankfully.
I have tried several things to try and get dvi=>anything and it
just won't work for me. Any help is appreciated. I am fairly familiar
with installing things: Emacs, expect, tcl, trn, gnus, nntp, bnews so I am
not a novice to software installation. Is there something I am blatantly
missing? I didn't seem to have a 'mf' program anywhere so I tried
linking it to either inimf or virmf (neither worked). I obviously don't
have the pk files I need but then again I don't know where to get them.
Help?
