[comp.text.tex] \newcounter help wanted

	Could someone explain the \newcounter command for me?
I am trying to create a \newcounter as a part of subsections
for the report style.  Something like this:

\newcounter{exercise}[subsection]

I want to use it just like the \section and \subsection commands.
I have tried various and sundry things, but nothing has worked.


	Any help would be appreciated.
