[comp.text.tex] bug in LaTeX equation environment

Hello,

I met a strange bug/undocumented feature of LaTeX, which messes up
the equation numbering. I have some 5 pages of LaTeX, in 4 different files,
and when I combine all of them TeX reports an error '... \endcsname
inserted ...'. As far as I found out it has something to do with
a call to \stepcounter (LaTeX) in the equation-environment. If I
compile only three of the files (one of them includes the other three) or
replace the equations by displaymaths, all goes well, but I was not even
able to isolate the equation which is producing the error (when I comment
out one equation, another one is producing the very same error). I have
alltogether 9 equations and I don't use special hacks !!!
If somebody has yet encountered a similar phenomenon, I would be glad to
have some answer. I can also send the source which produced the error,
but I think it is not useful to post it on the net.

       thanks in advance, r. stalder
