bed_gdg@SHSU.BITNET (George D. Greenwade) (01/02/91)
I ask what may be a very naive question, but.... I know that the USENET newsgroup comp.text.tex is linked to INFO-TeX, and I am appreciative of that newsgroup's subscription. What I don't know is how I can access this newsgroup (or any other, for that matter) in even a monitor mode, much less an interactive mode. From what I can tell via a number of private conversations, I feel I am not alone on this, although I have found a few scratching the surface, but not knowing exactly how. Presently, we are a BITNET-only site, but will be adding Internet capabilities in the very near future (all the stuff has been ordered, we know where our links are to be, all we are doing is waiting). I look forward to the addition of Internet here as it should enhance INFO-TeX gatewaying capabilities significantly. Assuming two states, (1) BITNET only and (2) Internet capabilities present, how might one go about linking in to USENET in general and comp.text.tex specifically? Even broader, where can I obtain more information about USENET and its newsgroups. While replies to INFO-TeX will be appreciated, a summary of all posts relevant to this will be provided since, at least in my perception, this is one of the greater mysteries of networked communication. All posts, even ones in sympathy of my quandary, will be appreciated as I think a better understanding of what all the TeX-oriented services are attempting to do and how they do it will ultimately assist all of us. Yours in ignorance, %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% George D.
