I have just installed DVIPS and am rather confused about its automatic font generation. When it fails to find a required font it invokes METAFONT, as expected, and appears to generate the required font. Eventually it always produces a message of "something went wrong with font <font>", gives the size of the file it supposedly wrote, and finishes. When I run it again on the same input, however, it invokes again METAFONT for the same font. So my real question is: where are the fonts so generated to be stored? I looked in my normal TeX pk and gf directories as well as DVIPS's "local" directories, but there doesn't seem to be anything new. Also, do the fonts produced automatically by DVIPS have anything to do with TeX 3.0's "virtual fonts"? Nick Nystrom Chemistry Department University of Pittsburgh nystrom@a.psc.edu
