Someone (sorry, now I lost his name) recently posted about wanting to use \label and \ref to refer to footnote numbers. Someone else posted that the problem of the original poster had to do with lack of \protect. I was having the same problem and defined my own counter, which works, but is tedious. After this discussion I tried putting \protect{\label{fn:xx}} inside a \fn and \ref{fn:xx} in the text. Lo and behold, it worked. But then I went to latex.tex and looked at its cross-referencing section. It explicitly says that \label and \ref works only for referencable counters, and the footnote counter is not referencable. So my question is (are) 1. Why does the reference to a footnote work? 2. Will some unexpected problem show up (the night before the book is due at the publisher)? 3. Are there lots of other undocumented features in latex? I am using latex 2.09 Thanks in advance Neal Beck Dept of Politcal Science, UCSD beck@ucsd.edu Dislaimer: The Regents pay me (a bit!) to distribute my opinions.
