[comp.text.tex] MusicTeX vs. MuTeX: what's best?

siemsen@sol.usc.edu (Pete Siemsen) (01/19/91)

I know nothing about music, but I maintain TeX stuff here, and would
like to support users who want to typeset music.

About a year ago, I installed MuTeX. There was little documentation
in the version I got from somewhere, but the example file demonstrated
that it produced beautiful music. I installed it because I thought
it was better than nothing.

More recently, I saw a post in comp.text.tex about MusicTeX, so I got
it. It seemed to be a replacement for MuTeX, as the font files had
the same names but there was more example material and a really nice
manual. I replaced our MuTeX stuff with MusicTeX stuff.

A student of music is now experimenting with the package, and
discovered a package of macros (mtex.tex) left over from the old MuTeX
distribution. He was interested in documentation for it. I scanned
old TeXhax issues, found a site for MuTeX, and retrieved it for the
second time. Apparently MuTeX is evolved, because this release
contains a nice 50-page manual, though it otherwise looks like the
older version of MuTeX that I used to have.

What is the "right" package to support for music people? Both? If
so, how do I explain the two manuals?
