The background: I am writing a book with Oxford Univ Press that I am typesetting myself. They want me to use the "Times" fonts, which are native to Postscript. These can be obtained within LaTeX via the dvi2ps program; there are patches to make this work in "times.sty" (modified to work with dvi2ps instead of dvips) and "psfonts.sty". [Note: I am using dvi2ps instead of dvips because the latter sometimes hangs mysteriously on pages from my output, and also because the latter seems to produce files not readable by "gs".] So far, this has been a major headache for me, apparently because of an incomplete or outdated version of psfonts.sty (missing capital Greek letters, incorrect math accents, etc). I have worked out patches for every problem encountered so far, but now I have one that I can't trace. The problem: The horizontal spacing in my output is erratic. This is particularly noticeable in non-display math symbols with subscripts, like $x_i$; the "i" is sometimes too far away (about 0.5ex) from the "x". I am afraid this problem will appear in the final galleys from the phototypesetting machine. Your advice is appreciated. -- Steve Vavasis (vavasis@cs.cornell.edu)
