Both could solve all their problems by getting hold of Tom Rokicki's `dvips'.
It comes with an AFMtoTFM program, and (I believe) is available in Unix, VMS
and MS-DOS versions. From a good archive (eg Aston); ie, it is free! I got a
copy recently and have been most impressed.
