[comp.text.tex] Custom numbering of

Probably an elementary question, but...
  How does one go about providing customized equations numbers, as
opposed to LaTeX provided equation numbers in displayed equations, and 
especially in equations aligned with {eqnarray}  ?
  I am typing something up which requires:

LHS = RHS         (35a)
lhs < rhs         (35b)
