[comp.text.tex] dvi3ps and psfig woes

I'm trying to get our LaTeX system to cope with graph files exported from
quattro in EPSF format. Having toiled and sweated, (re)discovered this group
and the FAQ, toiled and failed again, I'm now turning to you for help!

Originally I had (and have) a working latex system complete with previer
(dvisun) and printers (div2ps, dvijep or dvieps). However, I wanted to be
able to include those nice EPS files so I grabbed dvi3ps (v3.1, 11-16-89)
and my problems
began.

As built, dvi3ps generated postscript with a bug in the fonts - certain
characters would appear to have rubbish in their bitmaps. Comparison with
the source of my working dvi2ps (v2.1, I think) revealed a disagreement
of 1 in the calculation of one of the font description numbers (ok, so I
don't really know how it works). Presumably this made it allocate too few
bytes to store the bitmap leading to some kind of overflow and the errors
that I saw. However, the fix that I made, while sorting that out, leads
to a small number of random missing characters and causes ghostscript to
crash after a few pages. The postscript printer misses out certain characters
constantly, such as some letters, some maths symbols (eg integral), etc. And
this is on a file with NO psfig stuff; the old dvi2ps works fine

So, can anyone direct me to a working dvi->ps converter that incorporates
psfig and gets on with the SUBDIR directory structure that we have here.
(I looked at TeXPS but it seemed like too much effort to get it to use that
structure, especially when it might now work either).

Anyway, I've waffled enough. Can anyone help me? Please ?
