[comp.text.tex] Redefining an environment in terms of itself

matthew@pico.OZ (Matthew Blasikiewicz) (02/01/91)

Hello,

Please excuse me if this is a silly question.

I want to redefine the LaTeX eqnarray and array environments in terms
of themselves.
Specifically, I want to change the value of \arraycolsep to, say,
\somelength on entering the eqnarray environment and to \someotherlength
on entering the array environment, and restore the value of
\arraycolsep on leaving the environment to what it was when this
environment was entered.
(This would be useful for removing the excessive space around the
middle column in eqnarray by adjusting \somelength, and would allow
nesting of array in eqnaray if \someotherlength was equal to the
original \arraycolsep.)

If you can help me with this, then please post to this newsgrup
or mail me your suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
