Are you aware that there was an article in TUGboat about
just this issue?

To summarise in two line:
Karl Berry proposed a naming convention
 FTTWVEDD
where 
F  = Foundry (autologic, bitstream, ...
TT = Typeface family (Garamond, Avant Garde, ...
W  = Weight (hairline, bold, light, ...
V  = Variant (small caps, oblique, typewriter, ...
E  = Expansion (condensed, narrow, ...
DD = Design size
