[comp.text.tex] AutoCAD -> LaTeX

stevenr@cs.hw.ac.uk (A Psychotic Killer) (02/06/91)

This is perhaps a shot in the dark, but here goes.....

Does anyone know a way of converting drawings produced on AutoCAD to
some format that Latex recognises?
A bit like the `transfig' command that can convert FIG drawings (among
others) to Latex macros.

If it is any help, AutoCAD can produce DXF representations of it's
drawings.

As you might know, AutoCAD can also produce HPGL (plottter-format), by
choosing `file' as plotterdevice. A such file can quite easyly be
converted into for example P*stScript (lots of utilities are available
to do this), which then again can be used with LaTeX....

So far I dont know of any styles/utilities for LaTeX that allows
inclusion of plotter files directly.

AutoCAD can directly plot in PostScript. The only commands an
AutoCAD-produced PS file contains (except for the few scaling
commands and line width definitions) are lineto and moveto (AutoCAD
v10, no shading etc). It would be almost trivial to write a filter
program to convert this kind of PS into LaTeX commands. You would need
a DVI driver capable of drawing lines in arbitrary angles, though
(like the drivers in emTeX). emTeX drivers actually have lineto and
moveto commands implemented as \special's.

1. FAQ: Where can a working converting program (hpgl->ps) be found ?
I found one from 1988 at some ftp-site (I forgot which site) but this didn't
   work well.
2. Another possibility to include AutoCAD is to produce postscript files
directly from AutoCAD (this should be possible as far as I know) and to
include them. This depends a bit on your dvi->ps driver.

I agree.
