[comp.text.tex] Problem building LaTeX on Sony MIPS 3860

shapiro@mars.inria.fr (Marc Shapiro) (02/07/91)

I have a problem making LaTeX on a Sony News 3860 (MIPS processor). I
have already made LaTeX on many different machines (including
DEcstation 3100 with the same processor, and News 1860 from the same
company) from the same sources, but I have never encountered this
problem.

LaTeX compiles and runs fine (no error messages). Most text comes out
fine. However boxes appear to come out as if they were empty. For
instance I have a number of tables typeset with
        \newcommand{\BOX}[1]{\fbox{\parbox{\textwidth}{\small #1}}}
On the Sony 3840 all I get is a minuscule framebox with no contents.
I know the intended contnts *have* been typeset because I get the
corresponding {under,over}full box messages.

Lists also come out strangely. For instance bullets are not printed.

If anybody has a clue, please send me mail. virtex/initex are
compiled in C using web2c. Of course I tried recompiling from scratch
and re-installing, but to no avail.
