I don't know about "A Gentle Intro. to TeX", but there is a relatively new book out called "TeX for the Impatient" that I would recommend highly as an intro/reference alternate to The Knuth "TeXbook". The author is Paul W. Abrahams. It is out in paperback (Addison-Wesley). Jennifer Hodgdon hodgdon@helios.tn.cornell.edu OR @crnlassp.bitnet

Abrahams with Karl Berry Kathryn A. Hargreaves But I don't see who does what. It seems to me that Karl Berry contribute a lot to eplain but I don't the other two people's contribution. -- xiaofei@acsu.buffalo.edu / rutgers!ub!xiaofei / v118raqa@ubvms.bitnet

I picked up a copy of Gentle TeX awhile ago. I don't recall where I got it. I have it up for anonymous ftp on pacific.mps.ohio-state.edu with the path tex/gentle-tex.tex -- this is the original which has a local guide to IBM mainframes. I have a version that I will put up in the next few weeks that has a more appropriate into from Unix sites. --mark
