[comp.text.tex] HNDOUT.STY for ESSENTIAL.TEX

bed_gdg@SHSU.BITNET (George D. Greenwade) (02/10/91)

Yin-chin Shih <U4516@CZHETH5A.BITNET> pointed out that the ESSENTIAL.TEX
file package requires HNDOUT.STY. True, and I apologize for not pointing
out where this file was available. MAIL the command:
SENDME STY.HNDOUT
to FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET and you will receive this file (which, as usual,
you need to extract and store in reverse syntax -- HNDOUT.STY). I assumed
that everyone would know the required style file was in the STY archives at
FILESERV, but I don't really know why (it was a very long week). As this is
necessary for ESSENTIAL, I will also place it in the ESSENTIAL package of
files as ESSENTIAL.HDNOUT_STY. ESSENTIAL.HNDOUT_STY and STY.HNDOUT will be
the same file, you will not need both.

The version of HNDOUT.STY FILESERV distributes is taken from the files
supporting TeX-ED. It's only modification is the removal of the
site-specific logos and \maketitle's use of some \special commands for
PostScript input files (which I have no idea where to get anyway :-)).
HNDOUT.STY is a handy style to have, even if you aren't interested in
ESSENTIAL, as it provides an {example} environment which is rather nice.

Your response to the announcement of GENTLE and ESSENTIAL was remarkable --
between 1100 CST yesterday and 0900 CST today, over 560 files were
transported out of SHSU for INFO-TeX support alone! That is more than twice
the first *month's* traffic on FILESERV. I realize that ESSENTIAL is a
3-part package and GENTLE is a 15-part package, but that translates to quite
a few requests which we were gladly able to service. Interestingly, nearly
half of the requests were from non-subscribers, suggesting that either
campus mail/notes systems are highly efficient or the link to comp.text.tex
works quite well (don't know which; either way, it is apparent we are
getting to a large audience). If you were among the requesters and you
received back, via MAIL, files which got corrupted through a gateway or
something else (mailer translations -- arghhhh), contact me and I will
attempt to send the files as network files with no translation. This is not
yet automated, but is being worked on; in the interim, I will handle a few
requests manually if we have apparent translation problems between our sites.

Finally poll time: We are presently including a distribution of TeXMaG on
INFO-TeX (and that is not expected to change; this is not the poll issue).
This is the issue: Would you like for me to arrange to get TeXhax and UKTeX
distributed on INFO-TeX as well? I would guess most of you get TeXhax and
this may be a non-issue. My interest in this is to get TeXhax in the
archives here so you will be able to access all relevant TeX discussions in
the future from a single site in a single monthly file/notebook. I would
guess that most of you don't get UKTeX (the UK TUG's equivalent to TeXhax,
usually on a weekly basis). I am interested in placing recent back issues
of UKTeX on FILESERV (they are available on YMIR.CLAREMONT.EDU for anonymous
ftp if you are interested in the meantime) -- they have a really good
periodical packed with information, which (unfortunately) not many of us in
the U.S. get (which is about half of our subscriber base). I believe two
purposes can be served here -- getting this periodical a wider circulation
(which maybe they don't want; like I said, do you want me to check into
this?), and retention in the archives for the same reason as for TeXhax.
Replies will be appreciated.

As always, thanks for your interest in INFO-TeX; if we can do anything to
assist you further, please let me know. As we are now setup for world
posting, I will again belabor the point to our comp.text.tex readers -- a
post to INFO-TeX gets back to comp.text.tex *and* to INFO-TeX; a post to
comp.text.tex only (?) gets to that newsgroup and not to INFO-TeX, its
readers, or its archives. BTW, does *anyone* know of a comp.text.tex
archive site?

Regards
