I'm learning how to use PostScript fonts with dvips through the use of virtual fonts (to correct for the different locations of ligatures...I think). Anyways, dvips works fine. Unfortunately, xdvi doesn't support virtual fonts. Anybody modify xdvi to support virtual fonts? Any other previewers support virtual fonts? I'm trying to preview some PostScript fonts for which I have bitmaps for screen previewing. Any help is greatly appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lee Hetherington MIT Spoken Language Systems Group..........It's not easy to wreck a nice beach! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The program dvicopy ``converts a DVI file referencing VF fonts into a DVI file which does not contain such references'' according to the dvicopy.readme file. At some point, xdvi requires GF or PK files; therefore, to display PostScript fonts one must convert them to one of these formats. This issue will resolve itself when someone writes the X-Windows equivalent of Rokicki's dvips. None of the existing display programs can claim equivalence. xtex displays X11 fonts, but cannot read GF or PK files (an unnecessary defect and inconvenience, in my opinion), and xdvi does the latter, but not the former. The ultimate xdvi/xtex program should have both these capabilities, plus a dvipage-like low pass filter for a quality display. Steven Smith smith@sandalphon.harvard.edu

Use the dvicopy program by P Breitenlohner. It copies a dvi file
``expanding'' characters from virtual fonts to the corresponding
non-virtual font characters, movements and rules. I have heard that
it is available as part of the web2c package. Or get it by ftp from
here (tik.vtt.fi:~ftp/pub/tex/dvicopy.{web.Z,ch}.
