[comp.text.tex] Where can I get a copy of TeX?

I have never used TeX but have heard good things about it. 
Where can I get a copy of TeX?  I am using a PC with a dot matrix
printer. I understand that there are versions of TeX which provide
fonts for dot matrix printers.
