the american math society has released a new font package, called
AMSFonts, which includes the font msbm, a replacement for msym.
in this font, the shapes of the "blackboard bold" letters are changed
to conform more closely to the shapes of the fonts the ams uses to
typeset its publications. the ams uses this font for all requests
by authors for "blackboard bold", so it is felt by at least one
publisher that this "look" is appropriate.
the amsfonts package is available electronically from several archives,
among them e-math@math.ams.com, labrea.stanford.edu, and ymir.claremont.edu.
