[comp.text.tex] list of items in TeX

I would create above line by:
\item{[1 cm empty box] 1.} Level 1
\item{[2 cm empty box    ] a.} Level 2
\item{[3 cm empty box        ] i.} Level 3 ... etc.

I believe eplain provides nicer solutions.
