[comp.text.tex] New TeX/LaTeX user, setup on DOS

lasky@iris.eecs.ucdavis.EDU (Ty Lasky) (02/28/91)

I am just beginning to learn how to use LaTeX on the university UNIX
systems, and I have been having pretty good succes here. However, I am
trying to install TeX and LaTeX on my DOS system at home, and have
several questions.

1.	I have sb30tex, as well as many dvi* archives. I think I have
properly installed sb30tex, as I can process .tex files and generate
.dvi files. However, I am not sure which viewer(s) I should use. Right
now, I am using dview, and I have a VGA screen. This seems to work well,
although I am having trouble getting some fonts to work out. Is there a
better viewer for this, such as dvivga ?

Also, I have tried to use dvimswin from Win 3.0, and have had no
success getting anything to show up in the window.

2.	What else should I be getting? Do I need to get all the fonts (.pk
or .pxl files)? What .sty files should I get?

3.	What do I need to do to get LaTeX to work? Do I need to run initex on
lplain.tex ?

4.	How do I get printouts of the dvi files? I know how to generate a
postscript file, but I don't have a postscript printer. If I want to
print on, for example, a HP IIP, is there a dvi2hp, or something like that?

Please bear with me if these are trivial questions, and thank you for
any help that you can give me on this. If you feel that these questions
are not of interest to the newsgroup, please respond by e-mail.
