[comp.text.tex] xtex 2.17 ready: OpenWindows, Font Creation, More

grunwald@foobar.colorado.edu (Dirk Grunwald) (03/01/91)

Xtex 2.17 is ready for use. Xtex is a X previewer for TeX files.

Version 2.17 adds the following features:

+ users of OpenWindows can preview included postscript figures,
if they're using the \psfig macros. This is analagous to the
	  postscript previewing for DECstation's.

+ Fonts can be generated as needed; you are asked if you want to
generate a specific font. This can make 'xtex' as simple as
e.g., xdvi to maintain, once installed. This is analagous to the
	  font creation used in 'dvips'.

+ An explicit X font path can be set for the application; this will
augment the current X font path, reducing the hassle of telling
new users what font path to use.

+ Many people don't use Imake; scripts have been provided to
convert the Imakefiles into Makefiles even if you don't have
Imake. This is the one feature most prone to failure; I'd like
	  feedback on this.

+ More configuration parameters have been concentrated into the
Imake.Config file; see the Install document for installation
	  information.

SeeTeX-2.17.0.tar.Z can be ftp'd from foobar.colorado.edu
(128.138.243.105) and expo.lcs.mit.edu. Pre-converted fonts can be
copied from foobar.colorado.edu:pub/SeeTeX/Bdf-85dpi.

This version is the result of the work of many others, including Steve
Cole, Andres Stolcke, Morris Katz and others (me too).
