[comp.text.tex] old ams fonts failing

possibly-probably...
i had a similar problem once which was:
the pk format knows three formats of character descriptors:
the short, the extended short, and the long.
the long format can handle a few extras not common for TeX usage,like
vertical escapement, negative tfm width, HUGE size
which may pose problems for a dvi driver.
now the mexican maxview decided not to accept this long format at all
for which reason i do not know.
the old ams fonts,however, were delivered in pk format using long format
throughout, for which reason i do not know either.
solution was to unearth pktopx and pxtopk, and lo! the fonts all used the
short format now.
perhaps today one might try pktogf/gftopk instead...
 
still looking for the outside of the asylum...
