[comp.text.tex] Japanese

brosig@gmdzi.gmd.de (Andreas Brosig) (03/13/91)

Some days ago I installed Japanese La(TeX) from Francois Jalbert on my 386 PC
in order to become familiar with emTeX'S METAFONT package.

This is what I did:
- extracted all kanjis,
- created all mf-sources,
- created all pk-files in magsteps 0 and 3

Now I wanted to generate the fonttables, so I
- run fontable.exe -- (created) --> fontable.jap
- run jap2tex.exe on fontable.jap -- (created) --> fontable.tex
- finally compiled fontable.tex with emTeX's bigTeX

Here is my question:
Did anybody succeed in printing the WHOLE fontable.dvi by using emTeX's
dvihplj on a HP LaserJet Series II (512K memory)?
I tried e:>dvihplj @lj.cnf fontable /fl-1/oc1
Dvihplj aborts with *** Fatal error 2100: DVI file corrupted (undefined font)
when processing the 18th page.

There is one more curious thing:
When I cut all but one \begin{table}...\end{table} sections from fontable.tex,
but don't delete the unnecessary \newfont-declarations, dvihplj still gives
the error (although only four fonts are loaded) whereas dvi2lj from Gustaf
Neumann processes the dvi-file correctly.
So I tested a little bit more coming to the conclusion:
When I load up to 54 fonts on the whole no error occurs. Adding one more
\newfont{...} to fontable.tex dvihplj again gives the error. Hmmm...

Are there too many \newfont-declaractions (61 on the whole plus 3 preloaded)?
Is it the bad dvi file? Are my fonts corrupted? Is it dvihplj? (But this cannot
be because dviscr also reports an error, so the bug must hide 'earlier')
Is it an emTeX bug? Or is it because of the weather?
