P. 200 of the LaTeX manual gives several declarations for changing the type size. Of these, the declarations \scriptsize and \footnotesize inexplicably (to me) add some ugly space in front of them. Thus, in: unl{\tiny awful} unl{\scriptsize awful} unl{\footnotesize awful} unl{\small awful} \tiny and \small are fine, but the middle two produce something like: unl awful I tried \ignorespaces on either side of the declaration, and nothing happens. --d
