NASA PRESSES FCC TO OK MOBILE RADIO SATELLITE
SERVICE, Electronic Design, Mar. 8, p. 70.
NASA is urging the FCC to approve mobile radio
service using communications satellite
operating in the 800-MHz band before
considering applications from companies that
want to operate such a service. The agency
suggests that the FCC establish the service
first and deal with the applications later, as
it did in establishing the direct broadcast
satellite system. NASA claims that a delay
would have potentially disastrous effects,
since the mobile satellite capability is
probably the only communications system that
would survive a major earthquake.
