Hoping all have/had a good Easter/Passover (whichever permutation is
appropriate). Administrivia: The TUGPROC package (abstracts of the
proceedings of TUG meetings for 1987-1990 compiled by Christina Thiele) has
been renamed to TUGABS. The TUGPROC files, as announced, will remain in
place for retrieval until early this summer (to avoid conflicts if you have
old information). The former TUGPROC.1987 file is now TUGABS.87, and
similarly for 88, 89, and 90.
The TUGABS files are identical to the TUGPROC files, so if you are interested
in these files and have previously retrieved TUGPROC, you do not need to
retrieve TUGABS. For consistency, you may want to rename previously
retrieved files to the new filename structure, however.
Three reasons underlie this change, as mutually decided upon by Christina,
Peter Flynn, and myself. First, the filename remains under 8 characters and
the file extension is now reduced to fewer than 3 characters (so the files
can have a consistent name on all operating systems we are aware of).
Second, the name TUGPROC was misleading from at least two dimensions -- (a)
TUGPROC is already used as a standardized .STY name, and (b) the files are
really ABStracts, and not full proceedings. Third, Christina is continuing
her heroic work of making abstracts available electronically, including
meetings outside of North America. I am not sure when these will be
available as this is a long process -- one which I believe many of us would
like to thank Christina for while encouraging her continued efforts. The
plan we have developed is for all subsequent abstracts to be within the
idABS.yy filename structure ("id" = group or nation identifier; "yy" = year).
When these new abstracts are available, you will be notified.
