[comp.text.tex] Problems installing dvips

sdb%hotmomma@uunet.uu.net (Scott Ballantyne) (04/12/91)

Hello,

We have been using TeX and LaTex here for quite a while, using LJ's
for output. We recently upgraded the printers using the adobe
postscript cartridges, and so naturally everybody wants to use
postscript now. I have been trying to install dvips 4.09, and have
encountered a few problems which I am not informed enough to solve.

1) dvips seems to want to make fonts using mf. Great, except there
really isn't any reason to make fonts for this particular dvi file. We
are using the truesizes latex mods, and the file prints fine with the
old beebe drivers. It isn't a configuration problem, since it finds
some of the fonts just fine - it is actually looking for fonts that
don't exist.

2) MakeTexPK invokes mf with the line
	\mode:=$MODE; mag:=$MAG; batchmode; input $NAME
but mf still insists on drawing the characters using as it proceeds.

3) Finally, MakeTeXPK seems to be looking for a file of the name
cmr11.400gf, but what metafont actually leaves is cmr11.2602gf. So of
course MakeTeXPK assumes mf fails. How can I convert the 400 to the
2602, or get mf to do it for me??

Thanks in advance for your help - I will post a summary if there is
enough interest, and I also read this group often, so mail or postings
will reach me.
