[comp.text.tex] Knuth's book 3,16

piet@cs.ruu.nl (Piet van Oostrum) (03/29/91)

Sorry this question is not about TeX, but there is no comp.text.knuth :=)

Does anybody know if Knuth's book "3,16" is out. If so, what is the
publisher and maybe ISBN?

OK - nobody seems to have answered, but _what's_ "3,16"

Inquiring minds want to know!

3,16 (for the actual title see below) is a book Knuth wrote - I believe -
in his sabbatical year. For a bible study class he wanted to get a rather
representative selection of Bible verses. Rather than the usual study on a
certain topic or on one book only, he choose to take the same verse from
all books, and he choose chapter 3 verse 16 of each book (if applicable).
The book just contains the studies of all these verses. He had well-know
calligraphers or designers all around the world write the text of each
verse in an artistic way.

Yes, 3:16 has been published, by A-R editions in Wisconsin. You can get
from John Neal Bookseller,in Greensboro, NC (I think, although I seem to
be remembering Maryland for some reason). It's pretty nice.

maybe we need a new newsgroup "comp.knuth" :-)

I just ordered this book from my local bookstore. Apparently, this
book isn't on the "Books in Print" list, so things got a little
complicated: in addition to the information above, my bookstore needed
a price. So I called the publisher at the number listed above. It
seems that they have been getting a lot of calls about this book
recently, as the lady who answered the phone guessed that I was
inquiring about "3:16" (I explained to her about Knuth, TeX, and
USENET; I don't know if she understood it all, but she now knows their
phone number is around the world by now :-) ). Anyway, the price is
$29.95; with that and the information above, I was able to order the
book from my local bookstore.

BTW, this publisher specializes in music typesetting; there was a
blurb about them in a recent "UNIX Today!"
