Unionization of projectionists and the advent of multi-screen cinemas have pushed the operators into using new machines that have the entire 2 hour film on one 3 foot wide reel. As you can imagine, maintaining proper tension and making sure the winding occurs correctly is extremely difficult, and if not done right, extremely destructive. - Steven Gutfreund
