[comp.text.tex] How to find a particular file without posting

fritzz@ko.ldgo.columbia.edu (fritz zaucker) (04/23/91)

Every day there are several messages like

"Where can I find style XYZ or program ABC ..."

A nice solution is the following (if you can TELNET to Canada):

>telnet 132.206.2.3 (quiche.cs.mcgill.ca)

login: archie

archie> set pager
archie> prog XYZ (where XYZ is a regexp of what you are looking for)

Archie is automatically updated every once in a while, so if the file
you are looking for exists for longer than a couple of weeks, you'll
get a list of hosts where to ftp it from.

it would be real nice, if this information could be included in the
next FAQ issue to be posted (in fact it should be the first item in
the FAQ list of _every_ newsgroup.)
