[comp.text.tex] Comment environment in latex?

I have a file that defines "proof" to to be an environment, and
contains lots of instances of 
\begin{proof}
...
\end{proof}

scattered throughout the text. I want to print a version of the 
paper without any proofs. Is there an easy way to do this, without
extensive modifications to the text. (eg. some \newenvironment{proof}..)
definition?
