[comp.text.tex] Amiga TeX, Printers, Life, the universe, everything

krooglik@ecr.mu.oz.au (Alex Krooglik) (05/07/91)

OK, after talking to someone slightly more knowledgeable on TeX, I have
finally got a decent question to ask that I hope won't confuse anyone
as much as it has confused me.

I have an Amiga 2000, 1Mb RAM, 24 pin Epson LQ compat printer. I am
seeking to print out my TeX documents (PasTeX, the PD version) using
PrintDVI. However, I have a few interesting things I'd like to know
about.

Firstly, I cannot get it to print the correct sized text. I don't
know how fonts on TeX work (can anybody explain this simply?) and
I keep getting very small text. The font size being used is about
120point. My printer is capable of 360x360dpi, so why can't I print using
this resolution? What do I need?

Secondly, if my problem with printing the correct sized text is
eventually solved, I want to print and get the close-to-Laser quality
text I can get, and have seen, and expect, from my printer. Why can't
I presently do this? I believe there is a program that converts my
DVI files to PostScript format. Is this available for the Amiga.

Thirdly, can someone explain in simple terms how all the pieces in
the TeX puzzle fit together. Perhaps this would help me.

If you care to mail me directly, I will post a list of the answers I
found most helpful up in the Amiga/TeX related news areas, as I have
had other people inquiring of me the same questions. I don't have the
time to sift through newsgroups looking for threads, so direct mail
would be much appreciated.

   Thanks.
