I think the problem probably lies in the .AUX file, to which the
\section will have been written in a \addtocontents macro.

One workaround that you _might_ like to try (no guarantees, I've never
tried it in this context, but have had success with using \footnotemark
in a \title with a style that didn't permit \thanks):

\let\FootnoteMark=\footnotemark
\section{my header\FootnoteMark}\footnotetext{myref pp33--44}
\let\FootnoteMark=\relax

Which lets \FootnoteMark do what you want when the \section is first
obeyed, but leaves (perhaps) \relax in the AUX file. Which gives me
another idea: did you try

\section[my header]{my header\footnotemark}\footnotetext{myref pp33--44}

to make the TOC entry different from that in the document? Whatever you
do, I suspect that you'll need to delete all versions of the current
.AUX file (and possibly the .TOC as well) before reprocessing from
scratch).

I suspect that Brian's analysis of the problem is correct and, if it
is, then his second, simpler suggestion not only a solution, it is the
only logically correct thing to do (UNLESS you want the footnote to
appear in the table of contents also!).

Further to my request for help with this, it turns out all you
have to do is say \protect\footnotemark and it works fine inside
the argument of \section. RTFM.

Subject: Horizontal footnotes

I need to get footnotes spread horizontally across the bottom of the page
because there are a lot of them and they're very short. I would prefer
LaTeX because the user has a lot of sectioning, TOC etc. Is there a style
file for this anywhere; if not, is it possible to do it. I would normally
use EDMAC, but while that can spread footnotes, I would have to write all
the sectioning etc by hand, which seems a bit of a waste of time.

Subject: TeX for Hewlett-Packard PAWS

Somebody has suggested that people may (or more likely not) be interested
in some work I have been doing in the TeX line.

I work with a small network (12) Hewlett-Packard computers which run an
operating system called PAWS (PASCAL WORK STATION) which has a
resemblence to the ucsd system. It is not Unix or
anything like it. The systems are common in electronic engineering and
can also run under a BASIC based system.

Until recently all my TeXing was done on a VAX using an LN03
(non-postscript) printer. This is about to be removed. Since my
department's useage of TeX is quite high I have ported it to PAWS.
However...
It has NOT passed the TRIP test (but may well do so), and the font directory
locations are hard-wired into the code. I also have a laserjet driver which
appears to work in both landscape and portrait mode (not both at once!) and
TANGLE and WEAVE have been written and are now in use.

I don't know how many of these systems are in use and if any users are
likely to want to run TeX on them.

Is the above likely to be of interest to anyone?

I am a student in mathematics and I would
like to use LaTeX on my Atari 1040 STf with
a hard disk for a dissertation which I am
   going to write soon.

There are two PD TeX's in Germany, and two commercial ones. Both PD
versions are TeX 3.14 and MF 2.7, and both are available from the
DANTE FTP server. I'll see to mail them to the land where network
addresses are always read from behind so that they can be installed at
Aston.

I agree with Malcolm that the only proper solution is to create new
fonts. For use with plain TeX I found (with the help of Dominick)
that the following produced acceptable results for xcmr12. The
commented out lines produce an underlined font (ucmr12) or a
crossed-out and underlined font (xucmr12) or a doubly underlined font
(uucmr12). I use xcmr12 for deletions, ucmr12 for insertions, xucmr12
for deleted insertions uucmr12 for the second batch of insertions.
After that things start getting complicated...

The only problem is that spaces are not crossed-out or underlined

Has anyone out there using OzTeX 1.3 tried using it with the Adobe Expert
Sets? I've been able to generate TFMs acceptable to OzTeX for Adobe Baskerville
and Caslon3 and Caslon540 as well as Fontographer generated fonts but when I
come to using a TFM created for Adobe Garamond Regular I hit the message that
I've a "Bad metric file". The TFM works fine on the VAX : I am careful to
kermit it down using "Set file type binary". Any clues?

The standard technique, when TeX or a driver complains about some font-
related file, is to analyse the file with the standard tools. In this
case, I suggest you run TFtoPL on your .TFM file, both before and after
Kermitting it from the VAX. The Property List files ought to be
identical. Moreover, if there really _is_ something wrong with the
metrics, TFtoPL will tell you what.

I have seen recently a lot of correspondence about maths fonts for Times

the old ams fonts do not have an mf description,

from there. what's OZ? (i am not rubbishing this software,

Subject: crudetype 3.01 on Aston archive.

The archivists have now kindly placed the latest version of crudetype in
the Aston archive:

site: uk.ac.tex
directory: [tex-archive.drivers.crudetype.version3]

New features, besides bugfixes:
1. More coding schemes and support for 256-char fonts (Courtesy J.Warbrick)
2. Independent horizontal & vertical magnifications
3. 2 flavours of screen view (very system-dependent)
4. Barring bugs, this version conforms to most of the draft driver standard.
See the readme file for exceptions.

All previous change files are obsolete. I tried to make a new lot, but
cannot debug the primos or nos-ve versions as I have no access to these
machines. I tried a MS-dos changefile which failed (program compiles and
fails to run with a vague and incomprehensible error). Unix presents special
problems (see readme file), but the program seems to work on all Unixes (not
many) I have access to.
