I currently have PCTex V3.0. In South Africa, no computer supplier has heard of TeX. I have a 486-25Mhz with 16MB RAM running DOS 4.01. I need Big-PcTeX 386. Where can I get it? Is this the best TeX package for my system? Does it come with a later version of LaTeX than V2.09? If you need big TeX have a PC configured like the one indicated above and are willing to part with money, Big PCTeX386 is most likely the best choice for you. The field for big TeX for the PC under DOS consists of big emTeX(8088 and 286 versions... 386 version in beta test) big PCTeX/386 big PCTeX ran roughly 3.5 times faster than big emTeX, but has a bug prohibitting 8-bit input (sources have indicated that this will be fixed real soon now). Personal TeX can be contacted at Personal TeX Inc. 12 Madrona Ave. Mill Valley, CA 94941 415-388-8853 pti@well.sf.ca.us Since you are not connected directly to the internet, electronic retrieval of emTeX would probably not be a good idea although I believe that Dr. Eberhard Lisse (did I get that right?) who is also in your part of the continent has a copy. Otherwise, it is available on floppy disks from the TeX Users Group (they also are able to supply commercial TeX software) TeX Users Group P.O. I have not yet tested this, however.) -- Don Hosek // Quixote Digital Typography 714-625-0147 dhosek@ymir.claremont.edu On contract to Beckman Instruments 714-961-4562 dahosek@beckman.com

I tried previously to contact him at Natal but somehow, it didn't work and I forgot (as usual :-)-O) to follow up on this. I will mail this note to him again and if I can't get through, I will mail to the system manager at Natal to connect us. regards, el -- Dr. Eberhard W.
