Hello,
last week I asked:
Michael> can anybody tell me where I can find the latest officiel
Michael> LaTeX distribution? I have copied someone else's
Michael> "inputs"-directory with a lot of files quite some time ago
Michael> and I feel that I need a fresh start to get my documents
Michael> portable.
As I was afraid, this seems to be covered by some FAQ-posting that I
have missed so far.

Nevertheless, I also got a direct pointer from Joachim Schrod
(xitijsch@ddathd21.bitnet) saying that the official ftp-hosts for
LaTeX are labrea.stanford.edu and rusmv1.rus.uni-stuttgart.de, the
former maintained by TUG, the latter by DANTE.
Thanks
Michael

The command SENDME FAQ will get both of these files. If you are interested in only one of the two files, the command SENDME FAQ. (note the period!) will get the FAQ file only; and the command SENDME FAQ.SUPPLEMENT* will get the FAQ Supplement. For mail purposes, the FAQ Supplement has been split into three files, so the * is necessary to get all three parts with a single request. Include any of these commands in the body of a mail message to FILESERV@SHSU.BITNET or FILESERV@Niord.SHSU.edu and you will receive the requested file(s) back via mail as soon as our processor can handle the request and bandwidth become available between our sites. If you use SENDME FAQ you will get everything, so please do not use all three commands. Once again, to subscribe to TeX-Pubs (includes TeXhax Digest, UKTeX Digest, TeXMaG, FAQ, and FAQ Supplment all from one subscription), include the command SUBSCRIBE TeX-Pubs in the body of a mail message to SHSU's list server, LISTSERV@SHSU.BITNET. michael lipp communicated the following information from joachim schrod: ... the official ftp-hosts for LaTeX are labrea.stanford.edu and rusmv1.rus.uni-stuttgart.de, the former maintained by TUG, the latter by DANTE. i'd like to clear up a misconception. labrea is actually maintained by a devoted volunteer at stanford, at present dan kolkowitz. although tug has a very good working relationship with dan, tug is responsible only for delivering whatever is in the directory /tex/tugboat into his capable hands. dan takes care of everything else, including downloading tapes of new versions of tex, et al, that don knuth writes out on his unix workstation (knuth is no longer connected to any network). since the formal termination of the tex project several years ago, the stanford tex archive (originally at score, now at labrea) has no *official* standing or sponsorship at stanford. we are very much indebted to the volunteers who have kept this archive in such fine shape. so this message is not only conveying information, it is also a public "thank you" to these volunteers. -- bb -------
