I have been happily using emTeX for a couple of months and made the mistake of recommending it to a colleague who then came to me for help in getting dvidot working with his HP QuietJet printer. My basic question is: can someone tell us what the optimum configuration should be for this printer? In the printer documentation it says that if you are configuring it to use with some software and the software gives you a choice of printers, then you should select the first one that occurs in this list: QuietJet ThinkJet HP82906 HP2932 IBM Graphics Printer IBM Proprinter Epson MX-80 or MX-100 Standard Printer Because he had downloaded the FX fonts and my printer emulates the FX-80, we tried pretending it was an FX-80 (not having any idea of the differences between an FX-80 and an MX-80). The results were not good. We had two problems. The first was that as the printer made its passes, sometimes one line would not be in registry with the next, ie, the top bar of an F wouldn't line up right with the rest of the F. This seemed intermittent and not so often that you couldn't read the text, but pretty ugly nonetheless. The second problem was that the text was squashed in the vertical direction. The aspect ratio was wrong. The left and right margins were fine, but the top and bottom margins were too big. This confirmed the distinct impression that the letters themselves were squished. Any help would be appreciated. Tim Sullivan (tims@goshawk.lanl.gov)
