[comp.text.tex] AMS-TeX problem with inserts

When I try to use \midinsert or \topinsert in AMS-TeX 2.0, as documented in
The Joy of TeX, 2nd edition, pp. 166-167, I get an error message, "Invalid
use of \vspace".  Is this a bug in software or documentation?
