[rec.arts.cinema] Special effects career help

bruch@smoke.brl.mil (06/15/91)

I just finished my junior year as a mechanical engineer. I don't know too
much about cinema but am almost sure I would enjoy a career in special effects
because of the types of things I like (possibly more towards the modelling/
robotics side, but also would enjoy the computer animation or other areas?
just as much). The problem is, I don't know too much and would like to find
out some info.

Would anyone be able to tell me about the field of special effects. I would
like to know how to go about getting into the field, whom to contact (actual
addresses would be best), and other pertinent info. What types of schooling
would be best suited? I will most likely attend graduate school so if you
know any good programs that would be useful/related (directly or indirectly)
to special effects, that would be good too. Any thoughts would be
appreciated.

Someone is posting this for me because I work at a military lab for the
summer, and they don't allow us to send or receive from certain groups.
Therefore, if you have some info, could you email to me. Thanks for any
help.

Are requests for information such this one appropriate for
rec.arts.cinema? Note that this article was originally cross-posted
to rec.arts.movies. Are there other forums better suited to
answering requests for specific information? Currently I would
interpret this posting as being sufficiently close to a "factual
query" that the charter would prohibit it. However, I haven't made
up my mind about whether such requests should be allowed. If you
have any thoughts on whether the charter should permit such requests,
please post to the newsgroup. -- MKT]
